TV viewing at an all-time high
For the 2008-2009 TV season, the amount of television watched reached an all-time high as Americans spent four hours and 49 minutes a day on average in front of the TV, up four minutes from last year and up 20% from 10 years ago. The average household watched eight hours and 21 minutes a day on average, also at an all-time high.

Daily viewing during primetime remained flat compared to a year ago, but is still at its highest peak since 1991.
The continued increase in television consumption can be attributed to several factors including more television sets in the home, and Americans also have more channels and content to choose from and are using their DVRs more than ever.

So, in US History, I've just reached the beginning of WWII (no class today, because of a gas leak, so I'm actually a class behind. I should be able to catch up.). It is impossible to discuss the beginning of WWII without talking, however briefly, about Neville Chamberlain, and this often provokes mild snorts of derision from the class, "Peace in our time, ha!" sort of thing, especially when I mention that people saw him as a hero after that announcement. I then remind them of this: | Mobilized | Dead | Wounded | Missing & PoW | total lost | Russia | 12,000,000 | 1,700,000 | 4,950,000 | 2,500,000 | 9,150,000 | Germany | 11,000,000 | 1,773,700 | 4,216,058 | 1,152,800 | 7,142,558 | Great Britain | 8,904,467 | 908,371 | 2,090,212 | 191,652 | 3,190,235 | France | 8,410,000 | 1,375,800 | 4,266,000 | 537,000 | 6,178,800 | Austria-Hungary | 7,800,000 | 1,200,000 | 3,620,000 | 2,200,000 | 7,020,000 | Italy | 5,615,000 | 650,000 | 947,000 | 600,000 | 2,197,000 | US | 4,355,000 | 126,000 | 234,300 | 4,526 | 364,826 | Ottoman Empire | 2,850,000 | 325,000 | 400,000 | 250,000 | 975,000 | Totals | 60,934,467 | 8,058,871 | 20,723,570 | 7,435,978 | 36,218,419 | Which sort of puts the whole thing in perspective. Those are the casualty figures for WWI. They kind of drive home the point that Europe was in no way interested in fighting another war in 1939, and would have taken pretty much any path possible to avoid it.
Today is Armistice Day/Remembrance Day/Veterans Day - the day we commemorate the end of WWI. The other piece of data I sometimes give to my students is the fact that the memorial for the last shot fired in the war is across the street from the memorial to the first shot. 36 million soldiers were killed, maimed, or otherwise left lost as a result of the war; and the 24 million who were not surely suffered from having seen what they had seen. The fact that 20 years later, Europe was back at it...
With that in mind, a quote I stole from LG&M, who stole it from Jacob Levy:
"A Veteran's/ Armistice/ Remembrance Day observed on November 11 in particular shouldn't just mean a gauzy and somber honoring of live veterans and fallen soldiers. It should be in part a day of anger and horror about the particular war that ended on this day, the stupid brutality of it, and the evil that followed in its wake. Of course, no continuously-existing government (US, UK, Canada) is likely to create a day officially dedicated to pointing out that its predecessor contributed to the deaths of millions for no good cause. But we have the capacity to remember lessons other than the official ones."

He’s always up to something, and last night (November 10) Zac Efron was spotted out and about in our nation’s capitol, Washington DC.
The “High School Musical” stud showed up at the AMC Loews Georgetown to screen his new film “Me and Orson Welles,” looking hunky in a grey suit and tie.
Zac also made sure to hit up the St. Gregory Hotel’s M Street Bar and Grill for some grub with costar Claire Danes.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Efron dropped by the White House to meet with Kalpen Modi and chat about promoting art programs in public schools.

Lindsay Lohan's mother Dina has sparked fresh fears for the actress' health in a newly-released phone conversation with her ex-husband - confessing the star self-mutilates.
Michael Lohan has waged a bitter family battle after releasing a series of tearful phone conversations earlier this month, in which Dina voices concern for the actress' well-being.
In the latest leaked phone conversation, the Lohan matriarch confessed fears the Mean Girls star had engaged in a dangerous self-inflicted habit of "cutting".
She says, "Her cutting herself and hurting herself? Yeah, it's bad Michael, it's bad."
Referring to an impending tragedy, she adds, "I know that it's going to happen... I will feel it's all your fault, that's how I will feel, it's not about me," to which Michael retorts, "I will feel like it's everyone else's fault."
Michael Lohan claims he's leaking the calls with Dina, Lindsay and her former assistant Jenni Munro in a bid to convince his daughter to seek help for an alleged drug addiction.

Robert Pattinson had all our attention when he arrived at the London press events with a big smile, but of course Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were close behind! Kristen showed up covered up in a warm coat, but stripped it off to show off a unique dress to pose with her boys — what do you think of her red carpet look, love it or hate it? The trio posed together, but of course we can't stop smiling at seeing Rob and Kristen with their arms around each other after last night's OMG moment of being spotted holding hands. Check out all the photos and soon to come lots more video of all our interviews with the New Moon cast!

ABC Preview/Promo:
Breaking silence surrounding her brother, Michael Jackson's death, and much more, Janet Jackson has sat down for an exclusive interview with ABC's Robin Roberts.
In a preview of the forthcoming special, which airs next week, Jackson utters the words "It's still difficult for me" just before ABC cuts to photos of a young Janet and Michael.
While not much else has been revealed, Jackson does allude to work on a new album and something that she tells Roberts "I haven't talked about this, Robin, with anyone".
The forthcoming special, part of the new ABC feature "In The Spotlight With Robin Roberts,' is due to air Wednesday, November 18 at 10pm.
Miss Jackson if you're nasty.

"Dollhouse" is closing its doors at Fox.
The network has canceled Joss Whedon's cult fave, which in May beat the odds with a second-season pickup despite low ratings.
The sci-fi series, which is filming episode 11, is expected to finish its 13-episode order.
After some dismal performance in the fall, despite the ratings bumps "Dollhouse" got from DVR viewing, Fox benched the show for the November sweep after four episodes.
It is not clear if Fox will air the remaining episodes starting Dec. 4 as planned.
"Dollhouse" stars Eliza Dushku as a DNA-altered woman who gets implanted false memories for various missions and tasks.
Fox already has picked up breakout freshman dramedy "Glee" for a full season, while sophomore drama "Lie to Me" is waiting for an episodic order after receiving an order for three additional scripts last month. Freshman comedy "Brothers" is also still awaiting its fate, but its chances don't look good.

FASHION'S Magazine's Interview with Taylor Momsen
Gossip Girl's little sister is carving out her own career path. By Wayne Kar Photography by Randee St. Nicholas
"I know what I want."
It’s just a quote, but those five words could double as a motto for Taylor Momsen, the flaxen-haired actress whose real-life tabloid appearances almost—but not quite—match her trials and tribs as social nobody turned Queen B Jenny Humphrey on hit show Gossip Girl.
“As an actor, you always find similarities to a character so you can play them,” says Momsen. “Jenny’s creative, a fashion designer— she’s like me in that she’s really, really driven." ( More... )

The “National Treasure” actor recently told press, “We’re in touch, but not regularly. We love each other and that’s the most important thing.”
It all started back in 2001 when Jon appeared on “Access Hollywood” and made a teary plea to Jolie to get help for her “serious mental problems.”
And finally this past February Ang and Jon met face to face to clear the air. “Angie made the initial contact. Brad [Pitt] has been supportive- a key factor in her reaching out.”

She’s grown accustomed to her travel-intensive lifestyle and last night (November 10) Lady GaGa arrived into LAX International Airport from London, England. The “Poker Face” songstress looked a bit overwhelmed as she made her way through the terminal to find a mass of paparazzi waiting for her. GaGa is back in the States to prepare for her Monster Ball Tour, set to commence on November 27th in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and wraps up in January at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Of her costume design team Haus of GaGa, the Lady told press, “They’re my best friends. I’m not really sure what the world thinks … but I do hear things like, ‘Who is the Haus of Gaga?’ and, ‘Are you putting out a fashion line?’ And no one gets it. It’s not a commodity. It’s not something that’s meant to be sold.” ( Gaga )
tbh, i hate her...mostly because of her antics and her overenthusiastic stans...i especially hate the fact...that she's starting to GROW ON ME (since Paparazzi)...so i'm going to listen to both her albums and decide then to either further hate her or just find her antics annoying...

Seemingly ageless actress Demi Moore turns 47 tomorrow and she is blaming her age on the loss of all the good blockbuster movie roles.
“The frustrating part is that the type of roles I'd be interested in are not really coming to me. I hate to say it's a function of my age – but yes, I think in some ways it is,” Moore told W magazine in their December issue. "The majority of [female] roles are geared between 25 and 35. I know I have an eccentric, obsessive-compulsive side. I'm looking for roles that reach into that quirkier place."
Moore has become more famous in recent years for her marriage to “That '70s Show” actor Ashton Kutcher, 16 years her junior, than for her acting chops. But even though she accepts all the press criticism with a quiet grace, the actress told the magazine she doesn’t understand why she has been singled out as the poster child for May-December relationships since she isn’t the first older woman to marry a much younger man in Hollywood.
“I’m certainly not the first person to be in a relationship with a younger man, but somehow I was plucked out as a bit of a poster girl,” Moore said of her six and half year relationship with Kutcher. “I don’t know why that is. But I just kind of step back sometimes and say, ‘There is some reason, and what is it that I have to share in a positive way?’”
The “Ghost “ actress also told the magazine if people feel the need to assign her a label she prefers the title “puma” to the more derogatory “cougar.”
While Moore may not be getting the big studio roles she does star in two upcoming independent films, “Happy Tears” and “The Joneses” with David Duchovny. She is also the face of Helena Rubinstein’s new “Wanted” perfume.
I kid I kid...kinda. I mean she has a point. But she's not exactly known for her acting skills. And she doesn't look old anyway.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has released a list of the twenty films that have submitted themselves for consideration for this year’s Best Animated Feature Oscar. The unusually high number means that for the second time in the award’s history (and the first time since 2002), five films will be nominated for the award. This news should please the many folks who felt this year’s impressive batch of animated features deserved more than three shots at a nomination.
The twenty submitted films are:
“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” “Astro Boy” “Battle for Terra” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” “Coraline” “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” “The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” “Mary and Max” “The Missing Lynx” “Monsters vs. Aliens” “9” “Planet 51” “Ponyo” “The Princess and the Frog” “The Secret of Kells” “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” “A Town Called Panic” “Up”
As the Academy noted, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel,” “The Dolphin - Story of a Dreamer,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Planet 51,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “The Secret of Kells” and “A Town Called Panic” have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and meet all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process.
Previous winners of the award, now in its ninth year, include “Shrek,” “Spirited Away,” “Finding Nemo,” and last year’s “WALL-E.”
The 82nd Academy Award nominations will be announced February 2, 2010.

Carrie Underwood's "Play On" bows at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, shifting 318,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the country star and former "American Idol" champ's second album to top the Billboard 200, after her sophomore set "Carnival Ride" bowed in the penthouse with 527,000 in 2007. Underwood's debut effort, "Some Hearts," started at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2005 and at No. 1 on Top Country Albums with 315,000. "Play On's" 318,000 sum is also the largest sales week for an album by a woman in 2009 and the second-best sales week for a country release. Among country efforts this year, only Rascal Flatts' "Unstoppable" netted a bigger week, when it started at No. 1 with 351,000. Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" arrives on the Billboard 200 at No. 3 with 149,000 copies, marking the singer's fifth top 10 effort and best sales week since "Cieli Di Toscana" blew through 177,000 over Christmas week of 2001. "Christmas" also marks Bocelli's second-best debut sales week -- only the bow of "Songo" in 1999, with just a couple hundred more copies, pulled in a better first-week number. One step below Bocelli is the first "Glee" TV soundtrack, which enters with 113,000 copies. The second installment of the "Glee" soundtracks is due on Dec. 8. The "Now 32" hits compilation starts at No. 5 with 102,000. The last regular "Now" release, Vol. 31, moved 169,000 when it bowed at No. 1 earlier this year. The final debut in the top 10 this week comes from Weezer's "Raditude," which starts at No. 7 with 66,000. Weezer's last studio effort, its self-titled 2008 release, moved 126,000 upon its arrival at No. 4. Last week's Billboard 200 No. 1, Michael Jackson's "This Is It" falls to No. 2 with 196,000 (down 48%). Taylor Swift's "Fearless" marks its one-year anniversary on the chart as it drops three spots to No. 6 with 70,000 (down 36%) while Michael Buble's "Crazy Love" falls one rung to No. 8 with 59,000 (down 17%). Sting's "If On A Winter's Night" slides three places to No. 9 in its second week, selling 59,000 (down 26%). The "New Moon" soundtrack rounds out the top 10, dropping two slots to No. 10 with 52,000 (down 24%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 8) totaled 6.86 million units, up 9% compared to the sum last week (6.31 million) and down 2% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (7.02 million). Year to date album sales stand at 294.4 million, down 13% compared to the same total at this point last year (339.3 million). Kim Kardashian needs to walk around like this on a full-time basis. This is definitely a bitch I could go to T.G.I. Fridays with after work and guzzle on Electric Lemonades while freaking on our bar stools to Starpoint. And on the ride home, I'd promise to be polite and barf in the seat pocket in the back of her '87 Nissan Sentra (in metallic baby blue). That's what the back pocket is for.
Kim dropped the low-budget skankness and brought the beauty for an episode of E!'s Secret Celebrity. Kim wrote on her blog that the result of her 3-hour makeover was "kind of scary." Um. No. The regular Kim is really scary. This trick right here is all sorts of glamorous.
And for some strange reason, Kim also decided to post a never-before-seen still from her sex tape:

No More Girl-Girl for Fergie, Thanks to Josh and Therapy
Fergie may have dabbled in bisexuality in the past, but now that she's married to 'Transformers' hottie Josh Duhamel, it's monogamy all the way. In a very candor-filled interview with The Advocate, the real-life Stacy Ferguson says that although she digs chicks, she's learned (with the help of a therapist) that it would be cheating if she ever fooled around with the same sex.
"I've had a lot of fun with women, and I'm not ashamed of it," she says. "But just because I enjoy women doesn't mean I'm allowed to have affairs in my relationship."
How did the Black Eyed Peas diva come to this conclusion? With professional help, of course! "I learned through talking with my therapist that it is still cheating even if it's with girls, so there is a rule there."

Hollywood D-lister Lindsay Lohan's first collection as artistic advisor for Emanuel Ungaro was a "disaster", the founder of the French couture house said here, local press reported. "Lindsay Lohan's collaboration was a disaster," the designer said during a meeting on Monday night with the public at the international film festival in Estoril, near Lisbon. "I am furious but I can't do anything about it," fumed the designer, who emphasised that he no longer had any contact with the house which bears his name since he left in 2005. The house now belongs to an American investment company. Lohan, 23, whose drug habits and drink-driving conviction turned her into paparazzi fodder and wreaked havoc with her acting career, was named official muse to the prestigious house alongside Spanish designer Estrella Archs in September. Their first catwalk collection together unveiled in Paris in October was panned by the international fashion press. Ungaro said he regretted that the fashion house he started "is in the process of losing its soul."
"That happens to a lot of designers. We were the creators and patrons, responsible for the creation and destiny of our houses. But when we gave up our houses, we gave up our souls." Ungaro has seen a merry-go-round of chief designers come and go since Emanuel Ungaro hung up his scissors.
